I want to commence a discussion on the fact that 4 July 1776 fell on 17 Tammuz 5536. Why did the Founding Signers declare the Independence of the United States of America on such an ominous day? Does that singular fact have an influence upon the course of the United States of America? If yes, what is that influence? And can that founding influence change? What as Jews and Americans may we do to bring Torah to earth in the United States? Reply

Angela Leach Long Island, New York July 2, 2021
in response to Peter:

I have read that the Founding Fathers understood Hebrew and took seriously what the Written Torah says. This is most likely also true of the Pilgrims.
But the Founding Fathers were not Jewish. And there were most likely financial and other considerations happening at that time. Haym Salomon, a Jewish financier, was a major supporter of the Revolutionary War.
The Founding Fathers legislated separation of church and state.
I do not know whether or not it can be discerned how much they even knew of the existence of other texts central to religious Jewish life.
What does all of this mean? Hopefully, it means G_d's favor is forever upon the United States of America, despite all of her flaws and wrongdoings, same as it is for the Jewish People, because He was watching and knew the thoughts of all involved.
I think these groups of Gentiles taking His word so very seriously and sacrificing so much of what they considered important for it, must have made a huge impression upon the Almighty. Reply

Peter Nickitas July 2, 2021
in response to Angela Leach:

Angela, thank you very much for taking my inquiry seriously. Your observation that G-d granted us Jews second chances over and over, and the hope that G-d took the non-Jewish Founders seriously for taking G-do’s word so seriously that put their lives on the line for this inspire me; you spoke directly to my essence. Shabbat Shalom. Reply

in response to Angela Leach:

Hello, Angela

You are spot-on and I agree. Reply

Herman Vancouver July 2, 2021
in response to Angela Leach:

Yes indeed we ask for kindness mercy from G-d and from all people but favours from G-d are conditioned on merits and there the us is lacking Reply

Alex Brooklyn July 9, 2020

Thank you very much for this! I just have one question: don’t we say slichot in אלול? Reply

Chaya Mushka Kievman June 26, 2021
in response to Alex:

Yes we also say slichot then, but a different type of selichot is also said on most fast days talking about what happened on each fast days, among other things Reply

I have studied the 5 books of Mose quite a lot there
Is no mention of the destruction of the Temple
I knew about the 9 of av I scored 8/10 but I had to google Tammuz 17 Reply

Mommy June 27, 2021
in response to Herman Zurkinden:

The destruction of the temple isn't in the 5 books of Moses. Navi talks about what happened inside Eretz Yisroel. I'm not quite sure which Navi, but one of them do talk about this. Reply

Rabbi G California June 27, 2021
in response to Herman Zurkinden:

The destruction of the Temple is not in the 5 books of Moses, because they end with Moses death. (Before the Jews even went into the Land of Israel to build the Holy Temple.) It is, however, recorded in Tehillim or Psalms (79:1) It is also more descriptive in Jeremiah 26:18
and Micah 3:12, where the destruction is described as the "Har HaHabeit (Temple Mount) a shrine in the woods." Reply
