Quicken: A Program for the Soul
I remember a story of two fishing buddies who were fishing past the permitted fishing season. Feeling guilty, one said to the other, "I have broken the law. You be the judge and tell me what amount my fine should be. I will pay it immediately." The fine was five dollars. After paying his buddy, he proceeded to play judge. The new judge said, "Now it's your turn to be judged. Your fine will be 25 dollars!" But, protested the buddy on trial, "Recently a similar case was heard and the fine was five dollars." Yes, that's true, however I see that it has happened again. People won't learn their lesson until they pay higher fines, we need to be politicaly correct. What is politically correct for one person may not be so for another.
I believe that as we preach political correctness, we may be guilty of double standards. I'll demonstrate with the following examples. Lets take a look at the political arena.
There has been talk about the need for political correctness in our schools and government.
Recently Newt Gingrich had much explaining to do. As a Republican leader, Speaker of the House, Newt admitted violating House rules. Allegations of Newt's actions in unethical practice are of grave concern. Yet, Newt has publicly apologized, and the Republican law-makers are accepting his apology. The political arena sees no reason for an investigation. The rank and file have ensured that Gingrich remains Speaker of the House.
I ask, how can an aggressive, unrepentent Newt Gringrich ensure honesty from Congress when he is unequivocally guilty of ethical misconduct? What kind of message are we giving our country? The Speaker of the House is one of the most coveted jobs in Washington. What ever happened to political correctness?
In the entertainment world the following is taking place. Disneyland spokesman Tom Brocato announced that there will be a major change in Disneyland's ride, "The Pirates of the Caribbean." For the past 30 years the ride showed crazed pirates chasing women. Now it will be changed. It is to be replaced with more political correctness, pirates feasting and stuffing themselves with food!
What makes this politically correct is beyond my imagination. Aren't pirates always causing mayhem and chasing women? When having a choice between a woman and a ham sandwich, a buccaneer will go for the woman. To depict the pirates running after food would be very unfair to the image of pirates. I think this smells of bad political correctness.
In the politically correct business world, the highly paid Michael Ovitz, the president of the Disneyland company, announced that he will leave his job. His 14-month employment has come to an end. The severance agreement will pay Mr. Ovitz from the tune of 80 million to a record high of 120 million dollars. In the spirit of political correctness, Ovitz says he is happy with the agreement.
The story doesn't end here. Walt Disney stockholders sued Disney board members in superior court. They are calling the Ovitz agreements a waste of assets!
What happened to political correctness? On one side of the coin they are willing to change a 30 year fun ride in the name of political correctness and now they have the gall to change an agreement. Maybe they can replace the scenic show of the pirates chasing women with the stock holders chasing Ovitz!
In the world of politically correct marriages, we find the following news. Eileen McGann the wife of Dick Morris has taken a bold step forward in announcing that she will divorce her husband of 20 years. Dick had been in the company of a woman of ill repute and had the nerve to call president Clinton during one of his trysts. Morris was a former top political advisor to the president. He has now sold the rights to his exclusive story for millions of dollars. So much for political correctness. Why it took Mrs. Morris so long to see the light is something to think about. I mean, any politically correct woman would know that it's dangerous and sinful to stay with an adulterous man.
I dream for the day when the programmers of Quicken, the computer company famous for organizing business dealings, will come out with a computer program called "Quicken for honesty," a very spiritual program for the soul.
It would be a wonderful program fashioned after their best selling program. Imagine a program that you can start with no experience. All you do is enter data and the program "tracks it all."
Instead of titles and categories, entering bills, payments, bank accounts, investments, loans, credit cards, tax records and financial planning ending with a list of assets and liabilities, there would be the following spiritual and moral lists: altruism, compassion, correctness, diligence, good deeds, honesty, humility, orderliness, patience, respect, rightness, silence, sins and truth. As the present Quicken program promises, it would be the fastest and easiest way to organize your life. So too, you would get daily readouts, complete with personal character liabilities and assets. In seconds you would know if you are a decent human being or not. What a delightful program for your soul!
This program for moral correctness and not political correctness is desperately needed! Instead of preaching political correctness for society, the program would teach honesty with only one set of standards, based on the Bible.
Remember, the Bible has the best program for happiness and honesty. It never crashes nor does it ever need updating. It has been tested for thousands of years by millions of customers and has been a repeat-sale, second to none! Most of all, it runs on all systems.
