The Mourning After

Now that the seven days of mourning, called Shiva, have come to an end, the Israeli government must quickly find answers to the following questions:

Why are tens of thousands of ardent Zionists still protesting against their government's wishes to exchange land for peace? Loyal peace loving citizens of Israel are calling for breaking the Oslo Accord. Messages of hatred for the present government are openly seen.

In keeping with the wishes of the former chief rabbi of Israel, soldiers who always obeyed their commanders are now saying that they will not take part in the deployment of army bases. What is possessing so many people? Are they all extremists? I think not.

I understand there can be a few right wing extremists but this is of epidemic proportions! The present Labor party cannot pick up the gun used by the assassin and turn it against those who disagree with their policy. They should not be looking for a scapegoat. They should look inwards.

During the last vote in Oslo the late Premier Rabin said, "It's true that the last time I had a vote in the Knesset, I had a majority of one, 61 against 59. I said then and I said it publicly, as long as I have a majority of one, I will continue." That statement tells me that there is a lot more happening in Israel than meets the eye.

It also is alleged that the state of Israel may be lumping all groups that disagree with the present government policy as right wing extremists. Plans of cutting off funding from overseas are planned. Remember this: Disagreements are a way of democratic life. The right to donate money to parties who disagree with the present government is a personal privilege and should not be taken away.

Israel needs to understand that they need to get their own house in order.

It would be wise for the present government to look deeply into their hearts and see why people are going off the deep edge. Introspection is what is needed. It may very well be that they  are to blame.
